Performing Arts
Group Alternative Provision
Our Performing Arts Alternative Provision provides young people a place to explore their passion for the performing arts whilst still accessing core subjects in our functional skills classes. Students will be trained and earn qualifications in performance and technical theatre whilst working within a working theatre in Colchester. The Headgate Theatre provides our students with a working environment where they can explore and develop their skills using professional equipment with industry professionals. Our provision is designed for a small cohort of students to allow each student to thrive and reach their full potential.
Performing Arts
Our Performing Arts programme is at the heart of everything we do at StandUP. Students develop confidence, creativity and teamwork through practical, inclusive sessions in drama, dance and musical theatre.
What students will experience:
• Devising and scripting original performances
• Physical theatre and movement techniques
• Voice projection and public speaking
• Ensemble work and collaboration
• Live performance opportunities each term
• Industry-standard rehearsal processes
Qualifications: AQA unit awards in Performing Arts & Technical theatre
Technical Theatre
Students gain hands-on experience in the technical side of performance and production. These transferable skills open pathways into creative industries, events and beyond.
What students will learn:
• Stage lighting design and operation
• Sound engineering and live mixing
• Set design
• Costume and prop making
• Health and safety in production
Qualifications: AQA Unit Scheme awards in Technical Theatre Level 1, 2 & 3
Functional Maths & English
Every student at StandUP works towards Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English. Our approach is practical, relevant and embedded into creative projects wherever possible.
Our approach includes:
• Small group and 1:1 support sessions
• Real-world contexts: budgeting, scripts, applications
• Exam preparation with regular progress tracking
• Embedded literacy across all subjects
• Digital skills integrated into learning
• Personalised targets and flexible pacing
Qualifications: Functional Skills Entry Level - Level 2 in Maths & English
